The Zhaga Consortium has published its second interface specification for LED light engines. Zhaga Interface Specification Book 2 can now be downloaded from the organization’s website.In addition, Zhaga has created a database of certified products, which are all commercially available. The database will be constantly updated as new certified products reach the market.Zhaga is an international consortium of companies from throughout the lighting industry. Its main role is to develop interface specifications (known as Books) that enable the interchangeability of LED light engines made by different manufacturers.The publication of Book 2 provides full access to this specification for the entire lighting industry, not just Zhaga members, allowing companies to design their products to be interchangeable with other Zhaga-based products,” said Menno Treffers, secretary-general of the Zhaga Consortium.
Zhaga Interface Specification Book 2 describes a cylindrical, socketable LED light engine with integrated electronic control gear.The light engine has maximum dimensions of 70.2 mm and 45 mm height. The diameter of the circular light-emitting surface is typically 59 mm. The light engine can be locked into a holder in the luminaire by means of a twisting motion.The availability of Zhaga-certified products demonstrates that the specifications developed by Zhaga are being utilized by a range of companies in the lighting industry,” said Menno Treffers. “Other products are currently going through the certification process, and we expect to add many more products to the database in the coming months.Each interface specification, or Book, is developed by cooperation between the member companies of Zhaga. LED lighting makes it possible to manipulate the color

The active materials in LEDs have become so efficient and stable that research is currently shifting to the development of nanostructures that allow control over the directional distribution, the spectrum and the brightness of LED light, and the white light produced after the conversion of blue LED light by phosphors. Ray-tracing is a common simulation technique in optical design. However, the technique is expensive and imprecise when simulating fine details. The objective of this project is to combine this technique with visualization of the phase space of the optical system. This will give rise to shorter development times for new prototypes of lamps and light sources that use LEDs.

These use Total Internal Reflection (TIR) lenses, which focuses the light into parallel rays. The Agent of floodlight are mounted inside a reflecting cavity that helps keep the light from scattering and, as it leaves the unit, light is passed through a diffuser to reduce glare. According to the team, this design allows the lamp to project a uniform rectangle of light over a given area.

The LED street lamp was studied in simulation to determine the spread at a distance of 10 meters (33 ft) from the light source. This was measured by the team as the optical utilization factor (OUF), which describes the relationship between the flow rate of light at the target and the flow rate of light coming directly out of the LEDs. A higher OUF indicates better performance.The simulation showed an OUF of 51 to 81 percent, compared to a conventional street lamp’s “excellent” performance of 45 percent. The proposed street lamp loses only two percent of its light as direct pollution and reduces energy consumption by 40 to 60 percent. The team also claims that the new lamp is relatively easy to fabricate because it only has four parts, with the LED component already an industry.
