the chip production capacity for white LEDs by the end of 2012

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors will be stepping up its production output significantly by converting its two chip manufacturing facilities to 6-inch wafers while expanding both plants. A new production building is currently under construction in Penang, Malaysia, while in Regensburg, Germany, the available space is being reallocated. The two facilities will each be converting to the new manufacturing technology, introducing 6-inch wafers to replace the current 4-inch wafers. These measures are expected to almost double the chip production capacity for white LEDs by the end of 2012.

With this move, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is putting itself on track to cash in on the growth potential of international led high bay light and the expansion measures at its Regensburg and Penang production plants will be decisive in securing its international market position. The Penang chip manufacturing plant, which opened nearly two years ago, has been pegged for further expansion and conversion to 6-inch wafers. The total manufacturing area will be raised to around 25,000 sqm in 2012, creating some 400 additional jobs in the process. At the Regensburg plant, the available area is to be reallocated and InGaN (indium gallium nitride) production to be converted step by step from as early as the summer of 2011.

“By expanding our capacities for high-performance InGaN chips, we are consistently consolidating our market position. The LED market harbors great growth potential in many different fields of application and we intend to continue harnessing this,” said Aldo Kamper, CEO of LED Linear high bay light Semiconductors, “The company is an important link in OSRAM’s LED technology value-added chain.The capacity expansion will primarily affect InGaN chips employing thin-film and UX:3 technology, which are required in the production of white LEDs. These will be manufactured on 6-inch wafers from the outset and not on wafers with a 4-inch diameter, as hitherto.

Before this agreement, last year the two companies also received $4,000,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy to design and build the first white LED lighting pilot manufacturing facility in the United States.Under the agreement, Moser Baer Technologies will license Universal Display’s proprietary yaham and other LED technologies and purchase Universal Display’s highly energy-efficient Universal yaham materials for white LED panel manufacturing.In addition, the two companies will also work together in a five-year program to support Moser Baer’s manufacture of white YAHAM lighting products.

Additionally, to further explore the viability of having LED high bay lights in Singapore, JTC will be testing them out at another stretch of road at its upcoming CleanTech Park.JTC has received seven proposals for the test-bed, and it will be assessing them together with the led high bay light. The first round of tests should take place in the third quarter this year.

According to JTC engineering planning division director Koh Chwee, other new estates under JTC’s watch, such as Mediapolis, are potential candidates for more trials.In his opinion, with more rounds of LED Linear high bay light, and as technology improves, LED street lights should be ready to be rolled out on a bigger scale’ in another two to three years’ time in Singapore.

Therefore substrates with non flat surfaces can be patterned easily

PHABLE is a novel mask based photolithography technology that promises to revolutionize production of photonic structures such as photonic crystals, diffraction gratings and anti-reflection surfaces. High-throughput fabrication of such patterns over large areas is required for fabrication of high performance future devices in fields including led high bay light, solar cells and flat-screen displays. In PHABLE a mask is illuminated with a UV beam to form a high resolution image that has a very large depth of focus. Therefore substrates with non flat surfaces can be patterned easily.

The necessary high-resolution mask with the same 4-inch area as the final pattern was produced by DNP on a standard plate. UV photolithography exposures were performed on a PHABLE-R lithography tool made by Eulitha. Photonic crystal patterns consisting of circular holes on a 600-nm period hexagonal lattice were printed in a commercially available photoresist coated on Si wafers. The produced patterns were highly uniform over the whole 4” area of the wafers.

Demonstration of uniform patterning on 4” substrates is an important milestone as most targeted applications require patterning of large areas. For example, the high brightness LED industry is switching to 4” and 6” wafers from the traditional 2” base. Photonic crystal structures that enhance light extraction in LEDs or patterned sapphire substrates that improve performance of LED Linear high bay light grown on them can be fabricated with the PHABLE technology. Similarly, the required substrates for nanowire based LED or solar cell applications can be produced with this technology.

However, under the circumstances that various local governments followed suit to attract business investment, excess equipment investment intensified the concern of oversupply in the LED industry. Not only has the Chinese Central government been aware of this phenomenon, the financial resource of local governments will deplete gradually. Therefore, Yangzhou has announced that MOCVD fiscal subsidy policy will end in July in 2011, indicating that in order to receive equipment subsidy, manufacturers are required to complete the installation of MOCVD equipment before July 2011. Moreover, other local governments are considering following the same policy.

Generally speaking, the process of MOCVD equipment installation in China in 2010 was slower than expected. Apart from the delay of plants establishment, the oversupply in the latter half of this year also made most led high bay light adopt a wait-and-see attitude. Therefore, to stimulate investment among LED enterprises, several local governments had to specify an end-date in their fiscal subsidies. Therefore, LEDinside expects LED enterprises to install MOCVD equipment before the subsidy deadline, which may lead to another wave of aggressive MOCVD equipment purchase in the first half of 2011.

In the US market, SAS has started a new wafer fab recently, which was expected to produce 300,000 6-inch equivalent wafers. The company estimated US semiconductor wafer business would contribute about LED Linear high bay light to revenues in 2011.But in the solar-grade silicon wafers, the company planed to slow expansion at its production facilities in 2011, which resulted from uncertainty over government subsidies and a more cautious market outlook.

The shipment for LCD monitors was planed to 800,000 units and oversea markets would account for 540,000 units.

The Philips LED and dimming solution on the led high bay light will save more up to 40% of the energy currently consumed by the previously lighting on the highway, with a similar reduction in CO2 emissions from the energy use.

Frank van der Vloed, General Manager, Philips Lighting Benelux, pointed out that “The aim for our collaboration with the Rijkswaterstaat is to implement lighting solutions that both save energy and require less maintenance work on the roads. Wellypower Optronics reported NT$807 million (US$26.78 million) in November 2010 consolidated revenues, up 5.66% sequentially, in which Taiwan company's LED chip packaging and CCFL businesses contributed NT$429 million and NT$340 million, respectively, to represent 53.18% and 42.24% of November revenues.

Unity Opto Technology posted November revenues were NT$560 million (US$18.586 million), up 1.8% sequentially and LED Linear high bay light on year, with stronger demand for medium-to-large-size backlight applications. The revenues from January through November totaled NT$6.26 billion, up 73% compared to 2009.

LED lighting systems is still at a nascent stage in India

According to Jaysukh Patel, managing director, Ajanta Group, demand for LED lighting systems is still at a nascent stage in India. The power consumption in LED lighting uses direct current and saves 80 per cent more power as compared to compact fluorescent light (CFL) technology. But price plays a major role in lighting systems as in any other product's case.

“Retail prices for LED lighting are yet to come down as there are hardly any manufacturing units of indicator circuit (IC) for LED lighting systems. Once such manufacturing picks up in the country, the prices will come down and will boost the demand," Patel added.

The group already manufactures switches, wires, multi circuit breakers (MCBs), lamps, tubelights, power savers, telephones, calculators and watches. And it is prepared to wait to offer LED lighting at affordable prices in the country.

Azzurro noted, the new company was planed to choose in Dresden. And the funding was supplied by new partners including LED Linear high bay light, Good Energies and Emerald Technology Ventures and former investor Cedrus Private Equity and IBG Innovationsfonds.

LED thanks to our proven material supply capability

The Chinese LED industry is growing rapidly, with the level of investment during 2009 and the first half of 2010 exceeding that of the past several decades. In 2010 to date, China’s new investments in led high bay light projects total over RMB 70 billion (EUR 7.5 billion).

During 2010 Linde has been awarded gas supply contracts with six major LED manufacturers in China, including three Taiwan invested LED fabs in Jining, Suzhou and Changzhi respectively, as well as Neo-Neon in Yangzhou, Focus Lighting Technology in Suzhou and Walsin United Technology in Xi’an.

“In 2010 to date, Linde’s investment in support of electronics in China totals more than EUR 50 million,” commented Andrew Lau, President and General Manager of Linde LienHwa. “Linde LienHwa has achieved some significant customer wins in LED thanks to our proven material supply capability. The new Ammonia plant in Xiamen City further highlights our commitment to serving customers in emerging markets.”

Linde has a long history in the distillation and purification of electronic special gases and has utilised its highly specialised experience to build numerous purification plants. With its most advanced technology - the patented LED Linear high bay light distillation and purification system - Linde has built, installed and operated such plants at seven different locations around the world supplying a variety of gases, the latest being the Xiamen plant in FuJian Province, China, which started production in November 2010.

It’s said that new power-efficiency standards for flat-panel TV in China will be implemented from Dec. 1. And it estimated that Taiwanese flat-panel display suppliers AU Optronics and Chimei Innolux Corp. will benefit from this new TV standard.

Due to the influence of the standard, many existing models will have to quit the market, leaving a vacuum led high bay light equivalent to 15% of market demand up for grabs by suppliers with models featuring higher power efficiency.

According to Peng Shuang-lang, executive vice president of AU Optronics, in response to the implementation of the power-efficiency standards, TV firms will carry out closed-out sales for their existing models and purchase new items, a trend which will raise shipment of Taiwanese flat-panel displays to China.The new standards are also likely to promote the demand for LED Linear high bay light, which may emerge as a new mainstream item on the Chinese market in 2011.

China for its LED lighting products in less than two years since it entered that field

Reportedly, Taiwan Delta Electronics has acquired orders from major foreign buyers for LED lighting products, and it expects led high bay light sales to increase 10 fold in 2011.According to an interview from the Central News Agency, Roland Chiang, director of Delta Electronics' solid-state lighting division, said the company has generated large sales in Japan, the United States, Europe and China for its LED lighting products in less than two years since it entered that field.

However, Chiang didn’t disclose any information about which foreign buyers booked the orders. The local media guessed that it LED Linear high bay light likely has received orders from multinational firms such as Hitachi and YAHAM.

Chiang pointed that Japan is expected to account for 40 percent of the company's total LED lighting sales in 2010, but the figure is likely to fall to 30 percent in 2011 as sales to China grow.In comparison, China market is expected to take up 30 percent of the company's total LED lighting sales for 2010 and grow beyond that in 2011.

Leveraging a first-tier patent position in nanotechnology originating at MIT, QD Vision is a privately held company based in Watertown, Mass.TFT LCD driver IC maker Himax Technologies 3Q10 revenues were US$138 million, down 26.3% sequentially but still meeting its adjusted forecast. And gross margin increased 2.5pp to 22.9%. Quarterly net income came to US$400,000. Non-driver IC products accounted for 8.4% in 3Q revenues.

The company thought the decline result mainly affected from china-based customers raised inventory levels in 2Q but the government unexpectedly introduced tighter regulations on white-box handsets. But led high bay light was confident that capacity expansion by China-based panel makers would bring new opportunities for driver IC makers.

Epistar's October revenues decreased by 7% sequentially but increased 34% on year to NT$1.71 billion (US$56.64 million). Accumulated revenues from January to October totaled NT$16.66 billion, up 64.5% on year. The reason why the October revenues dropped was weaker than expected demand for notebook and TV backlighting, as well as the traditional weak season for small- to medium-size products.

On average, nearly one-third of a Walmart store’s energy consumption is tied to lighting. In addition to substantial energy led high bay and maintenance cost savings, the new LED parking lot lighting significantly reduces the greenhouse gas emissions associated with Walmart Puerto Rico’s operations.
