The Cree LR6 recessed downlights in the Sandra Day O’Connor School of Law rotunda consume 85-percent less energy than the incandescent fixtures they replaced, and are designed to last 50,000 hours, compared to approximately 1,000 hours for an incandescent bulb.
As we look ahead and anticipate rising energy costs, investing in LED technology becomes even more attractive. Community feedback on the initial lights has been overwhelmingly positive. Valdez citizens like the quality and color of the new LED lights and they are happy about the projected energy and maintenance cost savings.”
The YAHAM LED fixtures can be operated at three light levels. Initially, the fixtures will be operated at a higher setting for maximum light output during the winter months, when snow removal activities require high light levels. Going forward, city officials can choose to switch the lights to a lower operating level, depending on actual light-level requirements, which can potentially increase energy savings to 60 percent.

the LEDs will never operate outside of their recommended safe operating area
The iW3610 uses advanced digital control technology to automatically detect and operate seamlessly with a leading edge or a trailing edge dimmer or if no dimmer is present. In case of an un-supported dimmer, the device shuts down and goes into a fail-safe mode. The device is compatible with existing wall dimmers available worldwide and allows parallel lamp operation for true retrofit replacement of incandescent bulbs, halogen lamps and linear fluorescent tubes.
The iW3610 operates in quasi-resonant mode and employs adaptive gate drive control and iWatt’s proprietary EZ EMI technology to achieve high efficiency and a low EMI signature. Depending on the application, efficiencies greater than 80% and power factor greater than 0.9 are easily achievable. The iW3610’s maximum operating frequency of 200kHz enables LED designers to use smaller size components to design driver boards that are small enough to fit inside existing bulb and lamp housing or inside fluorescent tubes. In addition to the standard protection features, the iW3610 also provides over-temperature protection using an external NTC resistor for robust protection. Moreover, the IC provides temperature drift control of the LED driver current to ensure that the LEDs will never operate outside of their recommended safe operating area.
Configured in size and features for MR16 LED replacements, the first reference design describes a built and tested 3 watt (W) to 5 W LED driver solution for driving high-brightness LEDS (HB-LEDs). The second design is targeted at designers looking to achieve compliance with the ENERGY STAR 1.1 requirements for led high bay light in residential luminaire applications and describes a built and tested off-line GreenPoint solution for an isolated 8 W constant current LED driver.

The Intematix "phosphor-paint" retail signage solution implements a carefully designed, 50,000 hour backlight grid of royal-blue LEDs that excite the sign's photoluminescent display surface. In contrast to conventional backlit signage, in which the display surface filters white light to generate a desired color, the phosphor-paint actually generates the desired colors of light over the entire display surface. The result is high-visibility and visual quality in the sign's unlit daytime state, and vivid, "eye-popping" color, similar to neon signage, when lit.
Remote phosphor solutions have previously been applied to individual LEDs and in LED light fixtures. Intematix has created an innovative solution by marrying the elements – phosphor, blue LED excitation, LED light extraction and printing technology – and scaling the solution up to the level of retail signage, all while making sure it would deliver on the long life promise. Intematix emphasized that it had strong pending patents for the innovation, covering all aspects of the technology for phosphor-based signage based on LED backlighting.

which is desirable in battery operated products
For applications where maximum radiation power and intensity are preferred, the eight through-hole IR lamps released today by Harvatek can meet those needs. Available in both 3mm (T-1) and 5mm (T-1) lenses, in both round dome or flat top configurations, the IR lamp emitters features a wide range of emission angles (at half power) ranging from 20o to 100o. They are ideal for night vision, card readers, particle detection, wireless communications, optical counters and etc.
Both the surface-mount family and the through-hole family of IR emitters are available in both 850nm and 940nm peak wavelengths. In particular, the HE1-XXXAC series (850nm through-hole family) and the HT-XXXIRP series (850nm SMD family) provide fast rise and fall response times of less than 20ns, allowing them to be used in industrial light-barrier application and infrared data transmission applications. Furthermore, a typical forward voltage of 1.5V offers the additional benefit of power savings, which is desirable in battery operated products.
Russia’s Economy Minister Thursday announced that Russia plans to ban the production and sale of incandescent led high bay light from Jan. 1, 2014, in a move designed to reduce energy consumption, according to an article on Reuters.
Economy Minister Elvira Nabiullina told a news conference production and sale of incandescent bulbs with a power rating of more than 100 watts would be banned from Jan. 1, 2011, according to the report. And incandescent bulbs with a power rating of more than 75 watts will be banned from Jan. 1, 2013.The ban mirrors European Union’s plan to phase out incandescent bulbs by 2012. European households are already switching to more efficient halogen, LED and fluorescent CFL lamps.

the use of high quality LED light modules in luminaires
The resulting technology has been applied to grid lay-in and suspended fixture formats, both of which are UL certified and will be showcased by Lunera at Greenbuild 2009 (booth 1658, lower level).
The main field of application for the innovative LED modules will be actual lighting tasks: "We are out to offer our customers new and customised solutions involving the use of high quality LED light modules in luminaires and signage lighting. Our unique approach in this respect is entirely dependent upon close collaboration between all parties,” emphasised J?rg Amelung, co-founder and future Managing Director of Ledon LED.
Along with the production of LED panels, Ledon LED will in particular be developing and manufacturing complete led high bay light solutions including extremely robust contact and light-conducting elements, as well as concepts for addressing large-scale LED systems. Ledon LED will be drawing up a strategic agreement with Fraunhofer Gesellschaft governing pilot production on the Fraunhofer IPMS pilot line in Dresden. This world-beating production line can turn out high-efficiency OLED panels on 370 x 470 mm2 substrates with a cycle time of three minutes.

LED products for the office space were chosen based on performance
Part of a cost-saving initiative that began in late 2007, the decision to use LEDs was twofold. Arrow Components Mexico wanted to invest in a long-term savings initiative while creating a showroom for LED technology for customers and suppliers. “Many of our customers in Mexico have been hesitant to adopt LEDs due to their comfort levels with fluorescent led high bay light,” said David Hoffmann, regional vice president at Arrow Electronics. “In order to accelerate the introduction of LEDs to the market, we knew we would have to use and promote the technology ourselves.”
LED products for the office space were chosen based on performance, cost savings and low maintenance. For example, the overhead LEDs accomplish all three objectives, as they offer the same brightness as fluorescent lighting but use about half the electricity. Additionally, because LEDs do not radiate heat, air conditioning expenses were reduced as well. Despite a higher initial cost for the LED fixtures, the payback is between two and three years depending on utility costs, and the lamps are guaranteed for 10 years.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have jointly issued a statement outlining each agency's responsibilities and roles in the Energy Star products program. The EPA and DOE agreed to coordinate efforts to expand and enhance both the National Building Rating Program and the Energy Star program. According to the statement, the Energy Star products program will be improved with expanded coverage, more frequent updates, enhanced efforts on product testing, and a new effort to recognize super efficient products.
The agreement stipulates that the EPA will be the brand manager for the Energy Star and Super Star for products program including marketing, outreach, monitoring and verification, and setting the performance level(s). Performance levels will be set using established, and consistent principles for the Energy Star brand. The statement indicated that generally, products in the top 25% will qualify as Energy Star and the top 5% will qualify as Super Star.
